LINER NOTES: Jim and T3Z

I recorded Riding By and There to Forever in 2022, with my friends George Coyne and Charles Ditto (aka Johnny Staccato band) at Parrot Tracks Studio in Manchaca TX, where I've recorded for many years.

In 2023, a vocal-cord malfunction slowed my progress. Fortuitously, my talented neighbor Mark Viator, invited me to record an instrumental track, Tinker Belle's Kiss, at his home studio RambleHeart. Later, Beth Galiger added flute, and the Carr Sisters, ambient vocals.

When I finally came up for air in late 2023, we recorded my version of Townes Van Zandt’s Snowing on Raton. Riley Harod played cello. Then in early 2024, I enlisted help from Joey Colarusso on trumpet, Kyle Pratt on solo guitars and the Johnny Staccato band with Dave Pichler on bass on Un Cuento Latino.

Michelle Rahbar of Mothership Arts designed our CD artwork, featuring a childhood photo of me riding a bicycle in front of the school in Iraan, Texas, circa 1952-53. I'm guessing that either my father Clarence, or my mother Bonnie Jean, took this photo.

PS My Tinker Belle is NOT related to any Disney character; rather, she is a Creole beauty, inspired by Mississippi John Hurt. Cuento Latino was inspired by my love for Cuban music, and the memory of Mom playing 78rpm records - especially Hernando's Hideaway - when I was a kid.

RIDING BY Jim Stricklan © 1974 Front Room Music Leslie and Jim parade 1986

I'm not out of place
I'm not from outer space
my roots are here on earth
take it for what it's worth

Chorus:
I wish that you could see me riding by, riding by
I wish that you could see me riding by
won’t you try, won’t you try, won’t you try
cause I’m riding by with you
I’m riding high with you
see me riding by here too

There’s so much here to see
so little time to be
tomorrow's made of clay
we'll catch up with today

Chorus:
I wish that you could see me riding by, riding by
I wish that you could see me riding by
won’t you try, won’t you try, won’t you try
cause I’m riding by with you
I’m riding high with you
see me riding by here too

Bridge:
Castles in the air won’t take you anywhere
Count every hour you spend, you’ll never see them again

Chorus: Leslie on trike
I wish that you could see me riding by, riding by
I wish that you could see me riding by
won’t you try, won’t you try, won’t you try
cause I’m riding by with you
I’m riding high with you
see me riding by here too

THERE TO FOREVER Jim Stricklan © 1984 Front Room Music

HE DIDN’T CARE IF SHE DIDN’T WEAR…
FANCY GOWNS AND PERFUME IN HER HAIR,
HE JUST LOVED THAT LADY AND I DON’T MEAN MAYBE;
HE LOVED HER FROM THERE TO FOREVER SUCH A LONG, LONG TIME.

PRAIRIE SKIRTS AND PEARL BUTTON SHIRTS…
TIME IS A HEALER BUT IT STILL HURTS,
HOW HE LOVED THAT LADY AND I DON’T MEAN MAYBE;
HE LOVE HER FROM THERE TO FOREVER SUCH A LONG, LONG TIME.

A LOVER’S MOOD CAN BE SO RUDE,
IT’S SWEET AND SOUR LIKE THE CHINESE FOOD;
A SLICE OF LIFE IS NICE WHEN LOVE’S ON THE MENU…

HE DIDN’T CARE IF SHE DIDN’T WEAR…
FANCY GOWNS AND PERFUME IN HER HAIR,
HE JUST LOVED THAT LADY AND I DON’T MEAN MAYBE;
HE LOVED HER FROM THERE TO FOREVER
SUCH A LONG, LONG TIME. (Acapella)

UN CUENTO LATINO Jim Stricklan © 2024 Front Room Music Cars in Cuba

My common name — is Jim,
I’m at the pleasure of a musical whim;
A southern breeze—in a tropical wind,
My name is James but you can call me Jim.

I heard the trum—pets play,
When mama sang Hernando’s Hideaway;
Somehow it moves me more than I can say,
To see the lovely senoritas sway.

The Cuban beat is alive—
To see the spirit of the people survive;
And man, I really love those cars they drive,
That Cuban beat is very much alive. (Viva!)

And when you hear…my song—
Music can make your soul and body strong;
And now the band is gonna’ play along—
Bailer con el todo corazon! (dance with all your heart)
