The soul of the southwest is vibrantly alive in the authentic artistry of Jim Stricklan. Like great paintings, Jim’s songs are vivid stories of life and love in his homeland, the Great American Southwest. Jim’s warm baritone enhances the flow of his performances with sincerity and charm. His love of music as a teen led him down the twin paths of performance and radio that would feed each other to enrich his art for decades to come. While entertaining thousands of listeners as a radio personality in Denver, Houston, Shreveport and Austin, this self-taught guitarist of front rooms and back yards grew into the craft of performing songwriter in coffeehouses and clubs. Along the way, Jim won honors from Cashbox Magazine, Westword’s “Best of Denver”, The Colorado Country Music Foundation and The Southern Songwriters Guild . His radio experience has enabled him to work with many great artists, including Charlie Daniels, Ray Benson, Maryann Price , and Johnny Gimble . Jim has gained media stature and performing versatility by focusing his talent for creating the intimate musical moment. Jim’s recording legacy began as a featured artist on the 1976 KBPI Colorado Album. Significant airplay for his song No Resistance led to prominent club showcases. In Houston, Jim’s first studio album, the 1980 LP Whereabouts Unknown, helped launch his independent publishing company Front Room Music. LP’s made in Denver and Louisiana followed. In December 1986, his country single "Your Hiding Place" (West of Jim Stricklan CD) entered the national charts. In Austin since 1990, Jim has created CD’s that roam the musical range from country, swing and blues to acoustic rock and folk; offsetting fully produced studio works with intimate gems that return to his “Front Room Music” roots. The Front Room Music catalogue includes two excellent songbooks and over a dozen splendid CD’s. Jim's songs are heard coast to coast, as well as in Europe and the South Pacific. He has played a wide range of venues and events including Austin Music Hall, Pecan Street Festival, Shreveport's Hirsch Coliseum, Texas Folklife Festival, Denver's Paramount Theater, Swallow Hill Cafe, and the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. He has opened for Shake Russell, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Arlo Guthrie, and Asleep at The Wheel. Jim and his longtime musical pal Larry Rothwell often share the stage as Jim & Larry's Occassional Band, with their original wit and charm.
